Garuda Wisnu Kencana’s Story
Here is the story of Garuda Wisnu Kencana, which tells how the mythical bird Garuda was born and what he did, as told by Wikipedia. In GWK Street Theater, this story is carved into a stone relief. The first book of the great epic Mahabharata tells the story of how Garuda was born and what he did. The epic says that when Garuda first came out of his egg, he looked like a raging fire, just like the cosmic fire that destroys the world at the end of each age. Fearful, the gods begged him to spare them. Garuda heard their plea and shrunk himself and his power. Garuda’s father was the rishi Kasyapa, who made the world. His mother was Vinata, and Kadru, the mother of snakes, was her sister. One day, Vinata made a stupid bet and lost. Because of this, she was forced to work for her sister. In the Mahabharata, it says that the wives and sisters of Kashyapa, Vinata, and Kadru made a bet about what color Uchchaihshrava’s tail was. Garuda and Aruna’s mother, Vinata, said it was white, but Kadru said it was black. The loser would have to work for the winner as a servant. Kadru told her sons, Naga (which means “snake”), to cover the horse’s tail and make it look black. This helped Kadru win.
Garuda went up to the snakes and asked them what it would take to buy his mother’s freedom. He was determined to get her out of this situation. Their answer was that Garuda would have to bring them amrita, which is another name for the elixir of life. It was a big request. At that time, the gods owned the amrita. They were very protective of it because it was the source of their immortality. They had put a huge fire around the elixir that filled the sky. They had blocked the way to the elixir with a dangerous machine with sharp blades that turned quickly. And finally, they put two huge poisonous snakes next to the elixir to protect it in a dangerous way. Garuda was not scared, so he flew quickly to the gods’ home to steal their treasure. Knowing what he was going to do, the gods were ready for battle when they met him. Garuda, on the other hand, beat the whole group and spread them out in all directions. Taking water from many rivers into his mouth, he put out the fire that the gods had made to protect them. By making himself smaller, he was able to sneak past the blades of their killing machine. And lastly, he messed up the two huge snakes that they had set up as guards. He put the elixir in his mouth but didn’t swallow it. Then he took off again into the air and flew toward the snakes who were waiting eagerly. Along the way, he met Vishnu. Instead of fighting, they each made the other a promise.
Vishnu told Garuda that he could live forever even if he didn’t drink the elixir, and Garuda agreed to be Vishnu’s mount. As he flew on, he met the god of the sky, Indra. There was another exchange of promises. Garuda said that once he gave the elixir to the serpents, he would make it possible for Indra to get it back and bring it back to the gods. In return, Indra told Garuda that the snakes would be his food. Garuda finally set down in front of the waiting snakes. He put the elixir on the grass, which freed his mother Vinata from being a slave, and then told the snakes to do their religious rituals before eating it. As they ran off to do this, Indra flew in and stole the elixir. From then on, Garuda was a friend of the gods and Vishnu’s trusty mount. He was also a fierce enemy of snakes, which he hunted whenever he could.
