The Evolution of the Kecak Dance in Bali

Since the 1970s, the Kecak Dance in Bali has evolved and changed. There have been changes in the story and staging. In terms of the story for staging, not only one part of the Ramayana, but also other parts of the Ramayana’s story. Then, in terms of staging, it began to grow not only in one place, such as the Village Bona, Gianyar, but also in other villages in Bali, so that all regions in Bali have dozens of Kecak groups whose members are usually members of the Banjar. Activities such as the Kecak dance festival are frequently held in Bali by the government or a school of art in Bali. In addition, the number of dancers who ever performed in the Kecak dance was recorded in 1979, which involved 500 dancers. At the time, kecak performed a story from the Mahabharata. However, on September 29, 2006, the Tabanan regency government broke the record by organizing a massive Kecak dance with 5000 dancers at Tanah Lot, Tabanan, Bali. The record is very fantastic, where hundreds of dancers who are truly stunning are involved in performing the performance, you could say that the Kecak dance is in high demand by tourists who want to see traditional Balinese dances.

Kecak and Fire Dance Pattern

As a Kecak dance performance is supported by some very important factor, and the dance as an introduction to the story, of course, vital music to accompany the dancers movements. However, in the Kecak Dance, the music is generated by a combination of sounds from the members “cak,” which were approximately 50-70 people, all of whom will make music in akapela. Someone will act as a leader who sets the tone early, someone else as a suppressor in charge of high or low tone pressure, someone else as a solo singer, and someone else as the mastermind behind that to deliver the story. Dancers in the Kecak dance motion should not mimic the movement of gamelan-accompanied dance. So, in the Kecak dance, the dancer’s gestures are more relaxed because the storyline and sound mix take precedence. It is a very meaningful experience to watch a very beautiful balinese dance performed very nicely by the dancers, and the story is given a comedy spice so that it is not so boring at all, with a very good and funny storyline that will make this show even more enjoyable very quickly.

Story of a Bali Kecak and Fire Dance Performance

The accompanying music is provided by the human voice, the gamelan suara, a choir of a hundred men or more sitting in concentric circles, swaying, standing up, and lying prone as the story progresses.
The voices of the storytellers can be heard among the swaying masses, telling the unfolding tale. The story is a fragment from the Ramayana, a Hindu epic that finds expression in many forms, including painting and carving. Prince Rama, heir to the throne of Ayodya, and his wife Sita have been expelled from the kingdom by King Dasarata as a result of Rama’s stepmother’s deception. The story begins with Rama and Sita’s arrival in the Dandaka forest, accompanied by Rama’s brother Laksmana.

The trio has been observed by the demon Rahwana, King of Alengka, who has a crush on the lovely Sita. Rahwana dispatches his prime minister Marica to isolate Sita in order for Rahwana to kidnap her. Marica’s magical powers transform him into a golden deer, and he enters the forest, where Sita is so enchanted by it that she asks Rama to capture it for her. Rama pursues the deer, leaving his brother Laksamana behind with strict orders to protect Sita. When Sita believes she hears Rama’s cry for help, she forces Laksamana to go after him by accusing him of cowardice, and he goes off to help Rama with great reluctance after drawing a magic circle on the ground and telling Sita that she should not step outside the circle under any circumstances.

Sita, left alone in the forest, falls victim to the deception of Rahwana, who disguises himself as an old periest and bags Sita for some food because he is cold and hungry. When Sita steps outside the circle to give the old priest some food, Rahwana grabs her and drags her to his palace. Rahwana returns to his palace in Alengka and tries everything he can to seduce Sita without success. Sita is telling Rahwana’s niece Trijata about her cruel fate in the palace of Alengka when Hanoman appears, telling her that he is Rama’s envoy and proving it by showing her Rama’s ring. Sita gives Hanoman a hairpin to show that she is still alive and then massages him back to Rama to come to her rescue.

Meanwhile, Rama and Laksamana, accompanied by Tualen, are wandering through the forest in search of Sita when Meganada, Rahwana’s son, appears and challenges Rama and Laksamana to a battle. Meganada employs his magical abilities to fire an arrow, which magically transforms into a dragon, overpowering Rama and Laksamana and tying them up in ropes. The bird Garuda, King of the Birds and a close friend of King Dasarata, sees Rama’s predicament from high in the sky and comes to his rescue, freeing the brothers from the ropes. Sugriwa, king of the monkeys, and his monkey army join Rama and Lakshmana on their way to rescue Sita. This section of the Ramayana concludes with the battle between Sugriwa and his Monkey Army and Meganada and his Demon Army, which results in Meganada’s defeat.
