According to ancient tales inscribed in the Usana Bali Lontar, Tirta Empul emerged from a fierce battle between Bhatara Indra and the formidable King Mayanadenawa. Cunningly, King Mayanadenawa poisoned his troops with a malevolent spring, causing illness and weakness among Indra’s forces. In a stroke of divine intervention, Indra thrust his weapon into the ground, instantly conjuring the miraculous spring that healed his soldiers. King Indrajaya Sigha Warmadewa transformed this sacred site into the “Tirta Empul” or “steaming Pathirtaan” in 882 AD, a testament to the temple’s everlasting power.
