History of the Batik Method

One way to color fabric with wax is to use batik. It is an old craft that was found in Egypt in the 4th century BC. The cloth used to wrap mummies was also covered with wax or wax was used to make a pattern. A similar method was used in China during the Tang dynasty (618–907) and in the Inid and Japan during the Nara Period (64–794). The Yoruba tribe in Nigeria also used a method similar to batik. And in Indonesia, batik is thought to have been around since the Majapahit era. It became very popular at the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the 18th century. Batik made during the Majapahit era was written batik until the early 20th century. Stamped batik didn’t appear until after World War I, or around 1920. G.P. Rouffer says that the batik technique probably came from India or Sri Lanka in the 6th or 7th century. However, J.L.A. Brandes and F.A. Sutjipti believe that the tradition of batik technique is from the Toraja area, Flores, Halmahera, and Papua because these places are not influenced by Hinduism and have ancient traditions.

Batik Techniques in Indonesia

During the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Majapahit kingdom was in power, the oldest batik art was found in Indonesia. At that time, batik was only worn by people in the palace and their followers. Over time, this batik art spread outside the kingdom and became clothes that people from all walks of life wore. The pattern of this batik is not only found on clothing, but also in the reliefs of the Prambanan temple and the Borobudur temple. This means that batik already exists in Indonesia and didn’t come from India. However, it is still hard to say for sure where batik techniques came from in Indonesia, whether they were made by Indonesians in the past or by people from other countries who brought them there.

Types of Batik in Indonesia

As for the different kinds, there are a lot of different kinds of batik. These different kinds were made as the eras changed, which is why there are so many different kinds. All of these types of batik still have the features of painting on the fabric, which is one of the characteristics of batik. Carvings with patterns and colors that used to only be black and white can now be colored because the times have changed, which means dyes can be different. A very beautiful piece of art that is also part of a culture that will not be lost to time and is still being kept alive by batik artists in Indonesia. The different kinds of batik are:

  • Batik Tulis (Written Batik): This is one of the oldest types of batik. It was used in the ancient kingdoms, when people still painted pictures on cloth by hand with their hands and the help of canings. As for the price, this type of batik is quite expensive because it is made by hand and the process is very unique. It can’t be made the same way as other types of batik.
  • Batik Cap (Batik Stamp) is a type of batik in which a stamp or stamp with a certain batik motif is used instead of canting. Usually, this stamp is made of copper that has been carved ahead of time with a certain motif that will later be colored and stamped onto the fabric. This saves time and makes production faster.
  • Batik Printing (Batik Printing): Is a type of batik that is made in a very modern way, using a screen printing tool to make a lot of pieces in a short amount of time. This kind of batik is usually sold on the market for a low price. This kind of batik is sold in clothing stores, grocery stores, and markets.
  • Batik Kombinasi (Combination Batik) is a type of batik that combines the techniques of written batik and stamped batik. The goal is to make a batik that covers the flaws of stamped batik by painting the missing part with written batik. This batik is more elegant because the process of making it is more complicated, but the price isn’t much different from stamped batik.

Tools Making Batik in Indonesia

  • Canting Cap is a tool used in the batik stamping method. It is made of copper and has a certain pattern on it. There can only be one pattern on a canting stamp, so the pattern to be made is engraved on the canting cap first.
