The director, Prof. Dr. Kusnoto Setiodiwiriyo, chose a spot on 50 ha of government-owned land that had been reforested. On July 15, 1959, the Bali Botanical Garden was officially set up on the slopes of Tapak hill in the village of Candikuning, which is about 1,250 to 1,400 meters above sea level. The Bali Botanical Garden was first set up as a place to relax and collect species of conifers (non-flowering seed plants or gymnosperma) from all over the world. It was also made ready for scientific, cultural, and technical activities. Around 1965, development stopped because the time was not safe. It wasn’t until 1970 that the garden slowly started to get better. On April 30, 1976, the restoration was finished. As part of this, the area was expanded to 129.2 ha, and the purpose was changed from mainly collecting conifers to also saving plants from high-altitude, seasonally wet-dry areas in eastern Indonesia. In 1998, the Bali Botanical Garden was 154.5 hectares (ha) in size and had a collection of about 16,000 plants. These plants came from over 1500 species, 320 genera, and 155 families. Some of the specialized collections are of orchids, plants used in ceremonies, plants used for medicine, catus, ferns, bamboos, and trees.
